Club History

The Ponds Tennis Club was started in May 2014 by a small group of tennis enthusiasts who used to play regularly amongst themselves in The Ponds. From friends and neighbours, this small group of dedicated players started to grow and the club was formed as a more efficient way of utilising common resources like courts, tennis balls and other equipment.

As the player group became larger, we started to outgrow the 4 courts at The Ponds, which were also being used for coaching, private lessons and other casual tennis bookings. In July 2016 we started to expand our usage to the Bernie Mullane (Kellyville) and Bella Vista courts to better suit our member(s) needs.

During this time, the club grew organically without actively promoting itself externally. Indeed the lack of available courts in the area and the overhead of booking courts by volunteer members was providing a hard limit on the number of members the club could sustain.

In late 2014 we held our inaugural doubles tournament, followed up by our inaugural singles tournament. These were wildly popular with our members and provided a great deal of enthusiasm, fun, and friendly ribbing. These tournaments have been continued annually since. In August 2016 the brand new, $15 million dollar, state-of-the-art tennis facilities were opened in Stanhope Gardens at Blacktown Leisure Centre - right in our own back yard. With 16 courts that have an Australian Open surface, this facility not only provides the best tennis facilities in NSW but it also provides the room for our club to expand our membership and introduce more and more people to the wonderful game of tennis. In December 2016, after a significant time of saving, the club went live with its own members booking portal. This web-based infrastructure, together with booking arrangement with Blacktown Leisure Centre has alleviated almost all booking administration work that was such a bottleneck on a volunteer-run organisation.

We look forward to growing the club in the future, welcoming new members and keeping the tennis, above all, fun.
